County fire ban eased; some restrictions still apply
Although Cook County Sheriff Mark Falk has revoked a countywide burn ban, state and federal forest managers are keeping some of their restrictions in place.
The restrictions are necessary due to unusually dry conditions this spring, but a week of recent rainy days has allowed the ban to be taken off or relaxed in some areas. Full Story

Hospital income down for first quarter 2010
“It’s been a tough first quarter,” North Shore Hospital Controller Yvonne Gennrich reported to the board Friday, April 30, 2010. The hospital took in $195,000 between January and March this year, significantly less than the $518,000 it took in during the same time period a year ago. Full Story

Viking track opens outdoor season at Hermantown
In the middle of the driest, warmest spring in recent memory, the Cook County High School track team had its first outdoor track meet of the season at the 10-team Hermantown Invitational on Friday, April 30. Of course, it was rainy, windy, and foggy with a threat of thunderstorms—we were hoping on the way down they wouldn’t cancel the meet when we got there. Full Story
McGregor and Ely edge out Vikings in final innings
The Cook County baseball team lost two closely contested games this past week. On Tuesday, April 27, the Vikings lost a tough one-run game at home in the final inning to the McGregor Mercs, 10-9. On Saturday, May 1, Cook County traveled to Ely and lost 10-7 in a contest where the Timberwolves rallied for four runs in the sixth inning. The Vikings are now 4-4 on the season. Full Story
