According to the Federal Reserve’s latest report, the overall unemployment rate rose to 9.5 percent of the labor force in June, the highest since 1982. Locals participate in political process at Minneapolis GOP convention
Attending the 2010 Minnesota Republican Convention in Minneapolis April 29-May 1 was a privilege and a unique learning experience for this voting delegate from Cook County. It was similar to but a much larger forum than the Eighth Congressional District Convention held three weeks earlier in Cambridge when Chip Cravaack was endorsed as the 2010 U.S. House of Representative candidate. Local arts groups awarded state grants
The Grand Marais Art Colony received two grants and the Grand Marais Playhouse one grant from the Arrowhead Regional Arts Council (ARAC).
The Art Colony will receive $4,000 to increase the hours of its part-time staff person. This will allow the administrator more time to focus on strategic planning for marketing and programming. Full Story

The community gave its hearty support to a church youth group chili cook-off fundraiser held Saturday, April 24, 2010 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Grand Marais. The event raised about $1,000 to help Bethlehem Lutheran and Evangelical Free Church youth take a trip to the Twin Cities this summer and to benefit the Cook County Food Shelf. Full Story
Council discusses city budget woes
Any projects the city of Grand Marais undertakes next year will have to be scrutinized, scrutinized, and scrutinized again.

Early spring brings early opening for Gunflint Hills Golf Course
“We’re open,” Gunflint Hills Golf Course Manager Mike Kunshier reported to the Grand Marais Park Board Tuesday, May 4, 2010. “We opened up one day earlier than last year, to the day.” He said the course has never opened this early before.
In addition to the sale of season passes, the course brought in about $2,000 in April.

Hall and Grabko head multi-county housing group
Jim Hall, treasurer of the Cook County – Grand Marais Economic Development Authority (EDA), has been appointed chair of the Northeastern Minnesota HOME Consortium. Cook- Lake County Housing Coordinator Nancy Grabko gave a report to the EDA board at its April 13, 2010 meeting, announcing the important appointment. Full Story
