Madeline McCormick and her little brother Finn were about an hour and a half into their Gunflint Green Up workday Saturday, May 8, 2010. They were busy releasing trees along the Kekekabic Trail from the threat of being crowded out by faster-growing species around them. The snow that had fallen the night before was starting to melt. School budget uncertain but some teachers keep jobs
The amount of funding that Cook County Schools will receive from the State of Minnesota for the 2010-11 school year is a big unknown. The school board tried to work on its budget anyway in a special meeting Wednesday, May 5. Full Story
MnDOT reps say road construction through Duluth is manageable
Two Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) representatives and one Arrowhead Regional Development Commission (ARDC) representative met with county commissioners Tuesday, May 11, 2010 to let them know the types of projects that will be undertaken on state roads over the next nine years. A big project for this summer may make trips to Cook County a little harder for tourists. Full Story

Vikings lose three on the road, now 4-7 on the season
The Cook County baseball team had a tough week of competition losing three straight Polar League match-ups. The week started with a 7-5 loss to Silver Bay. Thenext day the Vikings traveled to Moose Lake where they were thumped 19-4. In the week’s final contest, Cook County traveled to Esko and lost 7-3. The Vikings now have a 4-7 record with five regular season games remaining. Full Story

Vikings fight off Polar Bears
The Cook County softball team had a busy week of action, playing in four games over seven days. The Vikings first traveled to Silver Bay where they were rudely greeted with a 0-14 loss. Thenext day Cook County traveled to Moose Lake where they lost 0-10 in five innings of play. In their third road trip in four days, the Vikings lost to Esko, 4-15. Full Story
