Council debates home-based business
Grand Marais city councilors held a spirited one-hour debate May 12 concerning the pros and cons of allowing a home-based business in a residentially zoned neighborhood on the west end of town. In the end, council passed a motion directing city staff to prepare a conditional use permit with a number of stipulations, and to present the revised version to them May 26 for a vote. Full Story

County commissioners concerned about bullying behavior in school
County Commissioner Jan Hall expressed a concern to her fellow county board members Tuesday, May 18, 2010, that was not necessarily in the purview of county government. She said she has been receiving calls from constituents who are concerned about bullying in the ISD166 school district. Full Story
Bridge at end of Arrowhead Trail replaced
The Pine River Bridge, on the Arrowhead Trail (County Road 74) between McFarland and Little John lakes, was earmarked as in dire need of repair by former County Engineer Shae Kosmalski in September 2009. Kosmalski said the 50-year-old bridge may have reached the end of its lifespan and vehicle weight restrictions were put in place to ensure public safety. Full Story
Vacationing woman dies after fall
An Apple Valley woman vacationing at a rental cabin east of Tofte was found dead on the Lake Superior shore last week. Cook County Law Enforcement received a call from Jim Doring, 65, of Apple Valley on May 18, 2010 at 12:14 p.m., requesting an ambulance for his wife, Elizabeth Marie Doring, 61, who had fallen from a cliff.
