As the May 11, 2010 meeting of the Cook County – Grand Marais Economic Development Authority (EDA) wound down and EDA board members had the opportunity to discuss “other matters that come before the board,” Don Davison noted that the city of Grand Marais was concerned about dilapidated buildings in the city. Lutsen ball field restoration considered
It looks like the softball field at Lutsen will finally get a much-needed makeover.
The Lutsen Town Board decided to request a special meeting on Thursday, June 3 at 6 p.m. to consider having the infield fixed. The meeting will be held at the town hall.

DNR, Forest Service lift all burning restrictions
The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and U.S. Forest Service have announced that effective at noon May 14, seasonal burning restrictions have been lifted in all counties and burning permits for vegetative matter will once again be available. Full Story
DNR burn permits now available online
Aaron Mielke with the Grand Marais DNR office was glad to announce earlier this month that Cook County is now able to obtain burning permits online. Mielke said Cook County was the last county to be added to the online permitting system because of computer programming issues—our county is the only one with east and west ranges to be factored in the permit issuing. County highway engineer candidate to be offered job
A hiring committee comprised of County Commissioners Bruce Martinson and Jan Hall, Engineering Technician Bill Parish, Maintenance Supervisor Russell Klegstad, and Personnel Director Janet Simonen agreed unanimously to offer to a licensed engineer named David Betts the county highway engineer/ agricultural inspector job recently vacated by Shae Kosmalski. No injuries, citations, in dump truck accident
KGM Contractors of Angora, Minnesota, the construction firm working on the Tofte section of Highway 61, contacted Cook County Law Enforcement at 1:48 p.m. on Wednesday, May 5 reporting that one of its trucks had gone in the ditch near Chateau LeVeaux. Full Story
Donations still being accepted for Chilean relief
On Saturday, May 8, the roof was raised on the Vasquez family’s new home in Catemu, Chile. This family is one of many who lost their homes to the Chilean 8.8 earthquake last February. Local donations made to the Chilean Relief Fund have helped support this effort, led by an American-Chilean couple, Keri Wolfe and Christian Fernandez, who have headed up the volunteer construction team.
