City water table remains safe from abandoned fuel tanks

ISD 166 considers four-day school week
Seventy people gathered at Cook County High School Thursday, May 20, 2010 to discuss the possibility of ISD 166 going to a four-day school week the fall of 2011. Another 30 or so had already met with district officials up the Gunflint Trail, in Hovland, and in the West End between May 10 and 18. Full Story
County board approves ATVs on paved road shoulders
If you see a Class I ATV driving along the right shoulder of a paved county road (other than the Gunflint Trail north of Devil Track Road), you don’t need to call the police—it’s legal. Full Story

One minute I’m having a quiet interview with a new business owner or an interesting senior citizen—the next I’m dashing off to try to get a picture of an unusual bird in the park or a boat in the harbor. Hidden in the fog
Who knew there were so many different kinds of fog? Fog can form in a number of ways, depending on how the cooling that caused the condensation occurred. There is radiation fog caused by the cooling of land after sunset. The cool ground produces condensation in the nearby air by heat conduction. Full Story

Vikings beat the Bombers in final inning
The Cook County baseball team split a pair of games this past week to bring its overall season record to 5-10. On Tuesday May 18, the Vikings traveled to Albrook and lost in a high-scoring game, 16-12. In a great Polar League battle against the Barnum Bombers on Friday, May 21, the Vikings won in a dramatic seventh inning comeback, 5-4. Full Story

Erica Borson is the lone female golfer competing for Cook County High School. Erica, daughter of Peter and Nichole Borson, will graduate this spring from Cook County. Her father was a standout athlete for Cook County where he starred in basketball and football for the Vikings in the mid 1980s. Full Story
