Forest Service begins hazardous tree removal along Gunflint Trail
Motorists traveling along the Gunflint Trail are advised that contract equipment will be working in the road right-of-way to remove trees killed as a result of the Ham Lake Fire. Crews will be working at various locations along the route for the next two to five weeks. Full Story
Grand Portage dock renovation leads to archaeological finds
Grand Portage, Minnesota’s oldest community, was recently the site of an important archaeology find.
Bob Walker, an excavator hired to replace the Grand Portage National Park Service dock, dumped a bucket of sludge on his barge, hosed it off and noticed a glint of copper in the muck. Full Story
Booster club pinch hitting for school district during financial hard times
The Cook County High School Athletic Booster Club contributed $16,750.25 to ISD 166 for school sports this year. “I’m certainly impressed with all the hard work they’ve done,” said board chair Bill Huggins at a May 19, 2010 school board meeting. The 2010 Cook County D.A.R.E. graduation was held on Friday, May 21 at the Arrowhead Center for the Arts. Chief Deputy Leif Lunde congratulated the students for completing the DARE curriculum and announced some exciting news about the DARE poster contest.
