Natural Resources Trust funds 71 projects
Minnesota’s Environment and Natural Resources Trust Fund will be releasing $26.1 million to 71 individual projects around the state. The bill containing the appropriations, which recently passed the Minnesota Legislature with bipartisan support, was based on project recommendations from the Legislative- Citizen Commission on Minnesota Resources (LCCMR). Injured burglary suspect charged
On March 12, 2010 at 3:23 a.m. the Cook County Sheriff ’s Office received a call reporting an injured party at the Minnesota Power Taconite Harbor Energy Center in Schroeder. Grand Marais man found deceased
Jeffrey Harris Forsberg, 50, of Grand Marais was found dead at his rental cabin next to TheBlue Moose in Grand Marais at 5:00 p.m. on Monday, May 31, 2010. His body was discovered by a friend who was worried when he could not reach Forsberg.
Forsberg had told his friend the night before that he had been ill with the flu for three days. Full Story
Hiker lost, found, on Centennial Trail
Sue Ahrendt of Tuscarora Lodge on the Gunflint Trail called Cook County Law Enforcement at 3:48 p.m. on May 30 reporting that a guest, 70-year-old James Hawkins of Minneapolis, had not returned from a hike. Hawkins had set off on the Centennial Trail alone early that morning. Although a number of other hikers had traversed the trail and returned, they had not reported seeing Hawkins. Full Story

County to get new highway engineer
David Betts has accepted the position of county engineer/ agricultural inspector and will start work by the end of June. According to Cook County Personnel Director Janet Simonen, Betts has 17 years of “significant” municipal experience. Full Story
County board lends support for biomass feasibility study grant

Early summer welcomed at the Care Center
The early summer weather was certainly welcomed by the residents and staff at North Shore Care Center. Many folks were able to be outdoors to plant veggies and flowers in earth boxes and enjoy lazy afternoons with snacks on the patio. Getting outside has lifted everyone’s spirits. Full Story

The Finland, Minnesota Historical Society will host the Tullia Choir from Kontiolahti, North Karelia, Finland, Europe and Split Rock Lighthouses’s 100- year birthday party program at 2 p.m. June 14. Illustrator Henry Cole coming to GM library
Kids in second and third grades are encouraged to come to Grand Marais Public Library on Tuesday, June 8, at 10:30 a.m. to meet Henry Cole, the illustrator of “Make a Splash at READ.”
This is a family program where Cole will tell how he decided to become an artist and a writer. Kids who have seen Cole have said that they learned practice makes perfect. Full Story

Cook County Higher Education, in collaboration with Cook County Law Enforcement and the Minnesota Department of Public Safety, is sponsoring Alcohol Server Training. The workshop will be offered on Tuesday, June 22 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Cascade Lodge meeting room in Lutsen and Wednesday, June 23 from 10 a.m. to noon at Windigo Lodge Restaurant on the Gunflint Trail.
