The board of directors of the Lloyd K. Johnson Foundation is pleased to announce the 2010 recipients of the scholarship awards of the Lloyd K. Johnson Post-Secondary School Scholarship. The scholarship award pays for all tuition, fees and books for one academic year at Lake Superior College in Duluth, with opportunity for a second year renewal scholarship based on academic performance. Reception for Cindy Nelson Award recipients
The 100th anniversary of commencement ceremonies at Cook County High School brought an opportunity to provide a gathering of past Cindy Nelson Award recipients. Since 1976, the Cindy Nelson Award has been given to one male and one female senior who have demonstrated a positive growth in character, academic and athletic achievement, while attending CCHS. Skinny water on Lake Saganaga
Saganaga Lake is as low as I have ever seen it. There are rock piles sticking out above the water line that make parts of the lake look entirely different. Many people have been using the landing off of Sag Store Road, or the “beach,” due to the difficulty getting through the lighthouse at 81. The rocky reefs by Stake Island are so high and dry they look like little islands. Full Story
Where are the fish biting?
For those who love walleye, the lakes that have been giving them up are Seagull Lake in 8 – 10 feet of water with jig and leech; Saganaga also in 8 – 10 feet with jig and leech or minnow; Elbow in 6 – 8 feet of water with jig and minnow or with bobber and leech; and Birch Lake in 10 – 12 feet of water using jig and minnow or leech. DNR asks citizens to watch out for turtles
Each year at this time, female turtles move from lakes, ponds, wetlands, rivers and streams to nesting areas, where they deposit their eggs in self-excavated nests. Unfortunately, many nesting areas are separated from the turtles’ wintering areas by roads. Full Story
