North Shore Ride Share launches July 27
The Cook County Local Energy Project (CCLEP) announces North Shore Ride Share, a free service connecting drivers and riders for travel, carpooling, and package pickup/ delivery. North Shore Ride Share will be available online at www.boreal. org/rideshare starting Tuesday, July 27.

Airport extension still in the works
An extension of the county airport near Devil Track Lake is still in the works, and federal dollars continue to be made available for it. According to airport manager Rod Roy, a federal grant for survey work needs to be spent this year in order to avoid losing out on close to $80,000. Thework is necessary for the runway project to go forward. Full Story
Two people resign from key county-affiliated positions
Cook County will once again be looking for another Veterans Services Officer. County Personnel Director Janet Simonen reported to the county board Tuesday, July 13, 2010 that Richard Mackenzie has submitted his resignation. He is recovering slowly from an extended illness and is not able to return to his position at this time. Full Story
County needs another fleet vehicle
At the Tuesday, July 13, 2010 county board meeting, commissioners authorized Maintenance Director Brian Silence to move forward on purchasing another fleet vehicle for county employees to use on county business. Thecounty had been trying to get along on fewer vehicles, but providing vehicles when they are needed is proving very difficult. Full Story

Cook County Personnel Director Janet Simonen reported to the county board that she met with representatives of the Veterans Administration about finding a replacement for Veteran Services Officer Richard Mackenzie, who recently resigned because of an extended illness. Full Story
Lake County Health & Human Service director charged with DWI in Cook County
The Lake County director of Health and Human Services, Dennis Reid Henkel, 61, of Duluth was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated (DWI), open bottle and speeding on Tuesday, July 13. Henkel was on his way to a regional director’s meeting at Superior Ridge Resort in Schroeder. Full Story
Motorist charged with DWI, fleeing police
A Duluth man, stopped by a Cook County Sheriff Deputy near Cascade River for speeding through the 40-mph zone on Friday, July 16, led the deputy and an assisting State Patrol Trooper on a brief chase on foot . Full Story

Flute Reed board expands members, plans annual meeting
The Flute Reed Partnership has announced that its board has been expanded from three to five members, said outgoing board member Rick Schubert.
“We felt that because of the large GLRI (Great Lakes Restoration Initiative) grant, we needed more people and more input on our board,” he explained. Full Story

The Cook County Historical Society now has the 1900 census available on its website: cookcountyhistory.org. Historical Society Director Pat Zankman said, “We are aware that many names, especially Native American, are not as written today but we have used the spelling of the original enumerator.” Full Story
