We’ve had some exceptionally busy weeks at the Cook County
News-Herald.
We are always busy. Some businesses slow down at some point during the year, but in the newspaper business, there isn’t a “shoulder season.” Just because there are fewer cars on the road or shoppers in the stores, there isn’t a slow down in the news. Full Story

“Is that a rock?” A first time Boundary Waters visitor pointed her paddle. “Or a moose?”
“A rock…” I squinted. “No it’s moving. A moose!”
We paddled closer as the large female buried her head in the lake, bringing up a mouthful of weeds. She looked at us and put her head under water again. Full Story

Down Memory Lane

• LTV Steel Mining Company will begin laying off about 100 workers at the end of August. The layoffs will affect workers at LTV’s Aurora- Hoyt Lakes site, and potentially at its Schroeder site.
The company has also decided to close the mine in July or August 2001. Full Story

The alarm wakes me with its blaring beep and the first thing I do is peep out the window.

But there it is. Not a driving downpour, just a gentle steady dripping.

Lots of activities and the coffee’s always on at Senior Center
Brighter side of aging
You can become an active and involved member of Cook County’s senior community just by putting all of the Senior Center events and activity possibilities together. Scrabble, wii bowling, flexibility exercising or a casino trip— you can do any or all of these things during August at the Senior Center. Full Story
