Hovland youth recovering from ATV accident
A Hovland youth was seriously injured in an all-terrain vehicle accident in Marcell, MN on Sunday, July 25. Nicholas Paul Wiegele, 13, was riding behind Austin Michael Weber, 14, of Zimmerman when the ATV left the roadway and struck a tree, throwing both boys off of the machine. Both were airlifted to St. Mary’s Medical Center in Duluth. Full Story
Fire scare for stuck vehicle
A truck became stuck on a Colvill back road and caused a fire recently, but it wasn’t someone out on a joyride through the brush—it was US Forest Service-contract employees conducting a sensitive plant survey who accidentally took a wrong turn. July is a new fiscal year for the Grand Marais Lions and Lioness Clubs. It is the month when new officers are installed and take on leadership positions, which help guide club activities, fundraisers, and special events.

Resort owner seeks property tax help from county board
Maureen O’Phelan, co-owner of Cascade and Solbakken resorts, is not happy with her property tax bill, especially since she successfully testified before the state legislature to amend statutes so she could qualify for homestead credit on both properties. Full Story

Hospital board leaves lots of leeway for levy increase
Each year, Cook County North Shore Hospital must decide how much funding to bring in through the countywide hospital levy. That time has rolled around again, and on July 22, 2010, the hospital board set the maximum amount it might collect next year. It could back down from that amount when it finalizes its new budget, however. Full Story
