Primary voter turnout highest in a decade
Minnesota Secretary of State Mark Ritchie announced on Wednesday, August 11, 2010 that more than 580,000 eligible Minnesota voters participated in Minnesota’s first August primary. The number is based on preliminary results reported by local election officials. Full Story

Super peak electric rates coming down the pike

Pick-up fire extinguished quickly
At 9:58 p.m. on Thursday, August 5, 2010, a passing motorist noticed a truck on fire at 700 West 5th Street in Grand Marais. The Grand Marais Fire Department and Cook County Ambulance were paged and were on the scene by 10:06 p.m. However, the truck’s owner, Jeffrey Alan Liljestrand, Jr. had nearly extinguished the blaze. Truck driver charged with possession of meth
Just after 12:00 noon on Friday, August 6, 2010, Cook County Law Enforcement received a call from the driver of a motor home on Highway 61 reporting that a loaded logging truck heading northbound on Highway 61 near Cutface Creek was passing unsafely and had forced another vehicle off the roadway. Dangerous felon arrested at the Grand Portage port of entry
U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers at Grand Portage arrested a Fort Lauderdale, Florida man considered to be a dangerous felon. Theman was wanted for charges of armed false imprisonment, tampering with witness/victim and felony battery. Full Story
Grand Marais man apparent suicide victim
On August 5 at 1:09 a.m. the Cook County Sheriff ’s Office received a 911 call reporting a possible suicide. Officers responded to 20 7th Ave W., Grand Marais where they found Gary Richard Schaedler, age 55, of Grand Marais deceased.
Theapparent cause of death was a single gunshot wound. The matter is under investigation by the Cook County Sheriff ’s Office. Full Story

Dayton makes brief stop in Grand Marais
Minnesota Governor candidate Mark Dayton spent a couple of hours in Grand Marais on Friday, August 6 and then flew off to Hallock, Luverne and Winona before reaching St. Paul that evening.
