Most visitors to the Fisherman’s Picnic Lumber Camp, presented by Wood-Mizer and Central Boiler, welcomed sprinkles of the cool Lake Superior water as Jenny Atkinson performed her fancy footwork on the log rolling logs, showing different techniques used to dislodge opponents in competition. Old-timers prevail in softball game vs. Vikings, 19-6
Friday night of Fisherman’s Picnic, the oldtimers and Cook County High School girls’ softball teams met for the fifth year in a still somewhat new rivalry. A good crowd was on hand at the Rec. Park ball field to cheer on both sides. Full Story
Skeeters win softball tournament
The 2010 Grand Marais Lions Club Softball Tournament enjoyed a great weekend of weather to go along with some great softball games. The tournament included 37 games between 20 teams from Thunder Bay, Minneapolis, Duluth, Silver Bay and Grand Marais. Full Story
Fisherman’s tennis champs
Ninety-three tennis players, making up 143 entries in various events, participated in the 34th Annual Fisherman’s Picnic Tennis Tournament and Fisherman’s Picnic Jr. Tennis Tournament, Aug. 4-8, at the Cook County public tennis courts in Grand Marais. Minnesota weather
Minnesotans love to talk about the weather and lately it has been hot and muggy. Unfortunately this is slip bobber time and it is anything but comfortable anchoring the boat when it is 85 degrees. I find myself moving a lot from spot to spot even if the fish are still biting, just to cool off. Full Story

Fisherman’s Picnic is over, but fishing is still going strong on the North Shore—despite the heat.
John at Buck’s Hardware said the heat seems to be affecting the walleye bite. Some anglers are finding walleye in 12 – 18 feet depths; others as deep as 40 feet. John said the lakes to try are Poplar, Devil Track, Elbow, Pike, and Two Island. Full Story
