Autumn Clearwater-Day spends a week at Camp RYLA
The Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) Camp was recently held on the University of Minnesota- Crookston campus. Each camper is sponsored by his or her local Rotary club and this year there were 140 RYLA campers who were sponsored by 56 Rotary International Clubs from District 5580. Full Story

August is Minnesota Breastfeeding Awareness Month, in conjunction with World Breastfeeding Week, Aug. 1-7. In honor of this observance, the Cook County WIC program and other organizations throughout the world are working to increase awareness of and support for breastfeeding. Full Story

Julie Peters earns criminology degree
Julie Peters, daughter of Margaret and the late Kermit Carlsen of Schroeder, graduated with a Master of Arts degree in criminology from the University of Minnesota-Duluth in May.
Julie, her husband Mike, and their daughter Margaret live in Duluth. Julie is a 1978 graduate of Cook County High School. Full Story
Heidi Hansen earns Ph. D. from the University of Minnesota
Heidi Hansen,
formerly a math instructor at Cook County High School, has received a Ph. D. in curriculum and instruction, mathematics education, from the University of Minnesota in the Twin Cities. Thedoctorate degree was officially awarded to her in July 2010. Full Story
Unique scholarship opportunity from literacy program
Established in 1998, the Cook County Literacy Scholarship has awarded scholarships to over 25 graduating high school seniors and adults in the community, disbursing more than $22,500 to worthy recipients. Full Story
Film crew adds excitement to Grand Portage rendezvous
The Grand Portage National Monument historic fur trade depot on Grand Portage Bay is always an interesting place during Rendezvous Days. This year was a bit busier, as a film crew from Great Divide Pictures used the great rendezvous as footage for a film about the park. The film will debut in autumn 2011. Full Story
Ruffed Grouse Society plans 18th annual banquet
The North Shore Chapter of the Ruffed Grouse Society (RGS) will hold its 18th Annual Sportsmen’s Banquet on Thursday, Sept. 9 at the Harbor Light Supper Club, 1615 Highway 61 in Grand Marais. The event begins with a reception party at 5:30 p.m. Dinner will be served at 7:30 p.m. Full Story
