Lutsen Town Board looks at future
Lutsen Fire Chief Paul Goettl told the Lutsen Town board that plans must be made to eventually replace the 60-year-old fire hall. That or expand, update, repair and refurbish the building.
“When we last did our training for firefighters we had to use the facility in Tofte because our building wasn’t adequate,” Goettl said at the board’s August 17 meeting. Full Story
Money rolling in from new 1% tax

Biomass energy plant still planned for county seat public buildings
The Cook County Local Energy Project (CCLEP) is working hard on behalf of Cook County. Last year, CCLEP helped the City of Grand Marais apply for a grant for a biomass facility that would generate heat and electricity for public buildings in Grand Marais. The city did not get the grant, but CCLEP did not stop pursuing the idea. Full Story
CBP officers arrest fugitive at Grand Portage
U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers apprehended a Kent, Washington man on Aug. 9 who was wanted for alleged robbery.
Officers arrested Daniel Pierre, 27, upon his arrival to the United States at the Grant Portage port of entry when a name check revealed that he was the subject of a National Crime Information Center (NCIC) warrant in Olympia, Washington. Full Story

Bakk receives 2010 Legislator of Distinction Award

Users of the Cook County Food Shelf are reminded that fresh produce is now available.
Bill Lenz, a volunteer with the Food Shelf, explained that normally people who visit the Food Shelf are permitted one box of food per month. He said most people come in and pick up their box at the beginning of the month, which is typically the busiest time. Full Story
