Football practice began in earnest last week as the Cook County Vikings greeted 28 players for workouts. Head Coach Mitch Dorr said he feels this year’s team will be young but very competitive, with an emphasis on speed and skills rather than size and brute strength. Full Story
Berries to Bears
The weather finally took a cool turn and the wind that followed the cold snap had a lot of gust to it. A few trees were downed on Sunday and Monday, especially in the Seagull area. This will be an ongoing event with every wind storm since more and more half-burnt Jack Pines are beginning to lose their strength. Full Story
Where are the fish biting?
There was no fish report from Buck’s Hardware this week, but that didn’t mean anglers were not having success.
Tyson at the Beaver House said smallmouth bass are still “pretty much biting everywhere.” Some local fishermen have also been having fun catching feisty little perch on area lakes. Full Story
Increase in ATV deaths in 2010
Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) officials are concerned about the recent upward trend in all-terrain vehicle (ATV) deaths. So far this year, 16 people have died in ATV accidents in the state. That compares to 14 for all of 2009. Full Story
Safety equipment found lacking in some boats
The safety of Minnesota boaters is a top priority. Conservation officers with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) want to see more folks taking the necessary precautions the rest of the summer to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience on the water.
