Superintendent suggests broadband could help ISD 166 compete
Superintendent Beth Schwarz reported to the ISD 166 school board Wednesday, August 18, 2010 that thanks to a $100,000 grant from the Blandin Foundation, the county is seeking proposals for projects that would demonstrate how ultra high speed Internet (“broadband”) could benefit the community, and the school could be one of the prime projects. Grand Marais man injured in motorcycle accident
Cook County Law Enforcement received a call from Naniboujou Lodge at 4:41 p.m. on Monday, August 16, reporting an accident in front of the lodge on Highway 61.
Hovland and Colvill Fire Departments, First Responders, and Cook County Ambulance were called and arrived on the scene to transport Tim Miller, 46, of Grand Marais, to Cook County North Shore Hospital. Full Story

City water mains to be replaced in two spots this fall
Thanks to a $100,000 grant from Iron Range Resources (IRR), some water mains in City of Grand Marais alleys will be replaced this fall. City Administrator Mike Roth believes at least some of the 4” mains, now considered undersized, may have been there since the 1930s. Full Story
Bargain shop brings bonanza to local nonprofits
First and Second Thrift Store has done it again—with the help of all the volunteers who staffed it from July of last year through June of this year, the people who donated goods, and the customers who bought them. The efforts of many people whose trails have led through Grand Marais have netted $41,568.50 to the nonprofit organizations of Cook County in this past year alone. Full Story
Boxes of history waiting for attention in Tofte
Volunteers are needed to help sort through historic documents in Tofte Township.
On August 12, 2010, town supervisor Jim King recommended to the town board that someone sort through old documents currently sitting in the fire hall attic. Those worth keeping could possibly be stored in the climate-controlled area of the Tofte Fishing Museum, he said. Full Story
Cook County North Shore Hospital Lab recognized
In May 2010, the Accreditation Committee of the College of American Pathologists (CAP), announced that the Cook County North Shore Hospital and Care Center Laboratory had once again been awarded accreditation, based on the results of an onsite inspection. Laboratory Technician Jennifer Backstrom said the inspection was “rigorous.” Full Story
Hospital deficit on target with expectations
As of the August 19, 2010 North Shore Hospital and Care Center board meeting, the facility was at a $228,262 loss. Controller Yvonne Gennrich told the board that this is on target with the $500,000 loss anticipated in the budget.
July was “a very good month for us in the outpatient department,” Gennrich said, with $991,511 in revenue. Full Story

Contemporary Native American art bridges old and new cultures
An Internet search reveals that the four Native American artists whose works were featured at Johnson Heritage Post August 13-29 had exhibited together before. Each artist’s contemporary paintings and drawings were distinct from the others, and at least one of the artists has roots in Cook County. Full Story

Bear hunters: Don't shoot radio-collared bears
Hunters participating in this fall’s bear hunt, which opened Sept. 1, should avoid shooting radio-collared or ear-tagged animals, said the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR). Taking a bear with a radio collar is legal, however, unless the bear is accompanied by a researcher who has identified the bear to the hunter as a research animal. Full Story
