Lots of smiles at Gunflint Canoe Races
Although an approaching storm meant no gunnel racing at the Wednesday, July 20 Gunflint-Seagull-Sag Canoe Races, the races that did take place were enjoyed by all. As were all the lakeside activities.
There was delicious food of course, including the famous Gunflint Trail sloppy joes and fixings. And again this year there were eating contests, with a twist. Full Story
Community center project on hold pending city’s participation
The county board decided on July 26 that it had hit the wall on the community center project since it did not have the financial support of the City of Grand Marais. Full Story
Arrowhead Electric garners $4 million from 1 percent tax
It didn’t take much convincing on July 26 for the county board to grant Arrowhead Electric Cooperative Inc. (AECI) $4 million from future proceeds of the county’s 1 percent sales and use tax, authorized by the state legislature for capital improvements throughout Cook County. Full Story

I laughed when I looked back at the Unorganized Territory that I wrote for last year’s Fisherman’s Picnic. Last year at this time I wrote about the ubiquitous seagull and how it is a symbol—albeit a sometimes-annoying symbol—of the North Shore. Full Story

Summer fun for junior tennis players
The Cook County tennis courts have been busy this summer as 47 junior tennis players ages 5 – 17 years joined the fun of the 2011 USTA National Junior Tennis League of Cook County program in Grand Marais. Full Story
Regular season ends for Little League, Parent Pitch and T-Ball
T-ball wrapped up last week with the Turtles finishing the season in a double header against the Moose and the Blue Jays. There were lots of smiles from players and parents. After the games ended medals were handed out. All the players left with big smiles on their faces. Great season, everyone! Full Story
Where are the fish biting?
Tyson at the Beaver House reports that northerns and bass are biting all over. Walleye report is still slow, but Pine Lake walleyes are biting. Lake trout are biting in 35 to 75 feet, and 70 to 120 feet with downriggers in Lake Superior, and the water temp is in the mid 50s. Full Story
