Security at courthouse to be beefed up in light of December shootings
County Attorney Tim Scannell, still on leave after becoming victim to a shooting by a convicted defendant immediately following a December trial at the courthouse, went before the county board on January 24, 2012 to talk about improving security at the courthouse. For the last three years, I’ve traveled to Duluth to watch the start of the John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon. I went to the starting line the first year because I wanted to get “insurance” shots— photos of the racers as they headed through the chute in broad daylight. Full Story

When they unveiled The Great American Roller Coaster at Six Flags Over Georgia, it was the roller coaster everybody wanted to ride. It had the longest and steepest first hill on any roller coaster of its time. I was a teenager back then. A busy week provides top performances for Nordic skiers
The week of January 15 was busy for the Cook County Nordic team. During both races skiers braved the cold, keeping attitudes positive while temperatures threatened to go negative. Full Story
Squirts take first place
In their second, tournament of the 2011-12 Squirt Hockey season, the Silver Bay/Cook County (SB/ CC) Squirts headed to Two Harbors for an eight-team event January 14 -15. The Squirts were 9-1 going into this tournament and would be facing Two Harbors White, the only team to defeat the SB/CC Squirts this year. Full Story
Vikings take fifth straight win in double overtime
The Cook County girls’ basketball team made the long trip to Moose Lake-Willow River on Thursday, January 19 to face the 12-4 Rebels and their high-powered offense.
It would be a night of great defense versus great offense, and on this night the Vikings’ defense would prevail. Full Story
