Fall Festivities at the Care Center

Kay Rosenthal

The residents at the North Shore Care Center have been enjoying our great fall weather. We welcomed the first day of fall with an outdoor concert on the patio followed by a leaf tour up the Gunflint Trail last week. Everyone is hoping for a few more warm days.

October is here with some fun themes to celebrate all month. There is Oktoberfest, Country Music Month, Leif Erickson Day, Columbus Day, National Pizza Month, and of course Halloween.

The Arrowhead Transit bus trips in October will take us downtown for shopping and dessert at the Blue Water Café. There will also be a trip to the Senior Center for lunch.

The monthly birthday party will be held on Wednesday, October 8 at 3 p.m. to honor Jane Backstrom and Ophelia Bassett. Plenty of cake and ice cream will be served along with piano music by Doug Sanders.

Our annual Oktoberfest celebration is a time to honor German-American Heritage Month. There will be a history session, pretzel snacks, and the classic movie Heidi. On Friday, October 17, there will be a special Uber Braten dinner served, followed by a polka dance with Jim and Mary Schliep at 6 p.m.

The first day of fall was a real treat for residents at the North Shore Care Center. Our beautiful warm weather allowed for an outdoor concert with old time country and gospel music performed by the Flute Reed Ramblers. Everyone enjoyed lemonade in the shade! The Flute Reed Ramblers are a family band from Hovland including John Redshaw on banjo, Kristen Caarlsgaard on fiddle, and 8-year-old Martine Redshaw on guitar.

At the end of the month classic country music will be performed by the band Portage on Saturday, October 25 at 6:30 p.m. As always, we invite families, friends, and community members to join in the fun at music events.

The music was enjoyed by all ages. Little Riley, 10 months old, joined in the fun on the patio for the concert. The music was enjoyed by all ages. Additional live music in the evenings will feature Myron Bursheim on Sundays, Irene Thompson on Mondays, Al Fuller on Tuesdays, and Susan Scherer on Wednesdays. We are very lucky to have so many talented musicians performing and volunteering on a regular basis at the Care Center.

The elders will be busy filling treat bags and making cupcakes for the Halloween Party at the Community Center again this year. A reminder that families are invited to stop by to “Trick or Treat” at the Care Center from 5-7 p.m. on Halloween night.

Many thanks to Marion Johnson for the donation of nine colorful bird feeders– and for keeping them filled each week. We also want to acknowledge the volunteers from Bethlehem Lutheran Church who participated in Core Service Day to clean up and beautify the gardens at the Care Center. We appreciate your hard work!

For more information about volunteering or about any of the activities going on, please contact the Activity Department at 218-387-3518 or visit the website: www.nshorehospital.com. There are volunteer opportunities for all ages at the North Shore Care Center.

Cook County has a vibrant and active community of elders. Each week we will offer Senior News to highlight our senior citizens. This week’s submission is about the North Shore Care Center, courtesy of Activities Director Kay Rosenthal.
