Cook County seventh-through ninth-grade track athletes recently had the chance to compete against athletes their own age at the Junior High Polar League Conference meet held on May 10.

Most of the time the younger kids attend and compete in varsity meets to save on gas, but this junior high meet, said head coach April Wahlstrom, “gave the students the chance to see how they stack up against their peers. As it turns out they did really well.”

There were many great performances for the girls’ team, Wahlstrom said. Zoe Nonnemacher ran the 100-meter dash in 13.9 seconds to finish second. Cecelia Chmelik ran the mile in 6:58, which placed her fourth in the seventh-and eighth-grade category. Chloe Blackburn ran 7:05 for the mile, which earned her fifth place in the ninth-grade division.

Will Surbaugh was close to breaking five minutes in the mile with his time of 5:01, which placed him second. Kevin Viren was right behind Will in third place with a time of 5:46 and Jack Willis finished fifth place.

Zoe Nonnemacher also placed second in the 400- meter dash with a time of 69 seconds. Ellen Callender was second and followed by Halle Lamb in third for the ninth-grade 400-meter dash.

Vaughn Swindlehurst took first place in the 200- meter hurdles. Zoe took second in the 200-meter run with a time of 29.7. Hailey Smith placed fifth in the shot put (21-6) and discus (55-6). She had a personal best in both of her events.

“Our boys’ 4x200-meter relay had a strong fifth-place finish in the 4x200 meter dash. Ole Sorenson, Doran Acero, Tanner DeBoer, and Sterling Pollock made up the 4x200 team,” Wahlstrom said.

“Ole Sorenson had a great long jump of 16 feet placing him second overall. We are beginning to wind the season down. We will have our Varsity Polar League Conference meet on Wednesday, May 17 in Two Harbors. Events will begin at 3:30 p.m. Come and cheer us on.”
