October Activities at the Care Center

Belinda Hudler

September was a busy month at the Care Center. The residents enjoyed an excellent picnic lunch at Sawtooth Ridges on September 14, visiting with all our friends there. Thanks to Missy Smith and Sharon Bloomquist for the food and fun, and Gary Houglum for grilling the hot dogs. On September 19th, we honored our two centenarians with a cake and ice cream social. Congratulations to Lu Pettijohn and Ione Jones! The elders also enjoyed a wonderful fall leaf tour of Maple Hill on September 28.

We’re sorry to see the busy summer months end but look forward to all the activities the cooler weather brings. More baking is planned for October, and plenty of craft activities as the residents start preparing for their annual holiday sale to be held in December. Hopefully, there will be a few more days on the patio too.

The monthly birthday party will be held on October 11 at 3 p.m. to honor Ophelia Bassett. There will be plenty of cake and ice cream along with favorite piano tunes by Doug Sanders.

The residents truly appreciate the gift of music that our wonderful volunteers provide each month.

Our “Oktoberfest” will be held on October 17 with a special musical visit by “The Schlieps,” who will be playing some beautiful accordion music for all to enjoy. The residents will be busy earlier in the day baking some pretzels for the event. The elders will also be treated to a special lunch of reuben sandwiches, coleslaw, pickles, and pumpkin pie provided by our outstanding dietary department here at North Shore Health. The residents truly appreciate the delicious food provided by the kitchen crew, not only for these special events but all year long!

There are two outings planned for October. On October 19 the residents will tour the “Plein Air Exhibit” at the Johnson Heritage Post, and on October 28 a lunch outing to the Senior Center will take place.

The Lioness will host their monthly social on Saturday, October 21 at 3 p.m. We always look forward to the social time and special desserts they provide for this event.

The residents will have a lot of Halloween fun on October 31. Hilja will host a “Halloween Happy Hour” at 2:30 p.m. with spooktacular snacks and drinks. Later that day, the elders will be passing out treats to the little ones. It is always a “treat” for the residents to see all the cute costumes, so remember to stop by the Care Center from 5-6:30 p.m. on Halloween night. The residents wish all our little trick or treaters a fun and safe Halloween.

Cook County has a vibrant and active community of elders. Each week we will offer Senior News to highlight our senior citizens. This week’s submission is about the North Shore Health Care Center, courtesy of Activities Director Belinda Hudler.
