Community Thanksgiving draws a large crowd

Staff report

It truly takes a village to, well, feed a village. In its 44th year, the Thanksgiving meal was a big hit. Once again a large team of dedicated volunteers who are pictured here helped to prepare the meal, set-up and cleanup for the meal that is held at the Grand Marais First Congregational Church. Besides the people pictured, others help by making pies and bread for the Thanksgiving feast.

Once again a large team of dedicated volunteers who are pictured here helped to prepare the meal, set-up and cleanup for the meal that is held at the Grand Marais First Congregational Church. Besides the people pictured, others help by making pies and bread for the Thanksgiving feast. Staff photo/Brian Larsen Mary Igoe, Community Thanksgiving coordinator, reported that 174 people turned out for the 2017 Thanksgiving feast at the First Congregational Church of the United Church of Christ in Grand Marais.

At 44 years and counting, the annual Thanksgiving dinner’s popularity appears to be growing.

For those who were ill or physically unable to attend the dinner, volunteers brought meals to them. This year, Igoe said, 64 meals were delivered throughout the community, more than double the usual amount distributed.

Igoe praised Dr. Jenny Delfs for heading up the program to give out meals to those who couldn’t make the dinner at the church.

“Without her, I’m quite sure we would still be at church sorting it all out…She (Delfs) was cool, calm and ever smiling!

“A huge thank you to everyone for donations of helping hands, food, and monetary contributions to make this happen,” said Igoe. “It truly ‘takes a village.’”
