Carl Smith

Carl William Smith of Grand Marais, MN and Coolidge, AZ, passed away January 10, 2025 at the age of 84, after a lifelong struggle with health issues, beginning when he contracted polio at age 13. He faced each day with extraordinary strength and resilience.
He was born March 20, 1940 to Stanley and Grace Smith.
He was well known for his LP gas service work, always willing to give a helping hand, his love for life, sense of humor, and having a knack for making friends.
While growing up he spent a lot of time up the Gunflint Trail. SeaGull Lake was one of his favorite places. In his younger years he worked for the Forest Service building trails and stairs along many lakes at the end of the trail. He worked in the propane business for many years. He started a Snowmobile Sales business and owned a motel with his wife, volunteered and was one of the first members of the Cook County Search and Rescue Squad.
In his younger years he enjoyed snowmobiling, fishing, camping, bowling, and flying his airplane. After having to retire early, he and Dianne enjoyed snowbirding to Arizona. He enjoyed off-roading in the desert, watching westerns, reading the daily news, old cars, painting pictures and ceramics, making jokes, playing games, an occasional trip to the casino, (He had a deal with Dianne that after three haircuts he would take her to the casino), and especially spending time with family and friends. He will be missed by all who knew him.
He is survived by his wife Dianne, of 64 years. Brothers, Russell Smith (Nancy), Darrell Smith, Sister, Robin DuChien (Steve), Daughters, Sherrie Franz, Brenda VanDell (Todd), and Wendy Ford.
