The scene was festive at the Pincushion trails on Tuesday morning. Buses filled the parking lot; colorful team tents dotted the stadium, the finish-line flags flapped in the breeze while spectators cheered throughout the course. At the beginning of January, it was unclear whether our annual home meet would be able to be held. But the stars aligned - we had enough snow to groom our Snowman loops and West Overlook, and the cold temperatures moderated enough to race safely.
Skyport airport is gone today, just a long, flat, straight patch of weeds and grass and ghosts of airplanes, but at one time, it was a hub of activity. It was the airport for Grand Marais and the surrounding area. An airport started by Clarence Krotz, a World War Two pilot with 73 missions over two tours of duty who saw action in Sardinia, Italy, North Africa, and the European Theater. Clarence was nearly killed on his last mission when a cannon shell blew through the nose of his B-26 Lockheed Martin Marauder, killing his co-pilot. He was discharged in 1945 at age 25 with a fist full of military medals and moved from his Chicago home to Cook County, purchasing the 77-acre Bent's Resort on Devil Track Lake for $8,000. However, the County informed him of a surveying error that meant he had purchased land along Devil's Track Lake. If he wanted the land to build an airstrip, he would have to pay the County another $8,000, a hefty sum that required a bank loan.
Over the past year, the Art Colony has implemented new programs in our ceramics studio, with the goal of offering more people the opportunity to work with clay. In addition to offering many multi-week classes, workshops, and demonstrations for both beginner and advanced students, we now have opportunities for studio access that are more flexible, and geared towards artists with varying levels of studio needs and experience.
Although the Cook County News-Herald knows that the majority of sportsmen and women are law-abiding folks, there are a few that run afoul of the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Conservation Officers. Periodically, the DNR provides a report of some of the miscreants the Conservation Officers (CO) have encountered. The News-Herald shares these stories as a reminder to all to be safe and to follow the rules!

Snow, not just dusting, is finally on the ground, six inches in some places, half a foot of skiable, snowmobiling, sliding white stuff, and more to come. Cold is also creeping into the region.
