The Historical Alliance of Cook County is excited to announce the third annual “Storytelling from the Back Roads of Cook County,” on October 11, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Arrowhead Center for the Arts. A decade or so ago, John Scheef appeared before the county board and attempted to negotiate a deal with the County for a land swap or cash for his 80-acre, landlocked property on Sawtooth Bluff. However, the county board at that time passed on the opportunity. Last spring, local attorney Tyson Smith, representing Scheef, made a convincing case that if the County didn’t purchase the land, it would be sold to a developer and developed. With that knowledge, the county board passed a motion on April 22, 2025, to seek $475,000 from the private sector to purchase John Scheef ’s 80acre parcel, which had been taxed at a value of $175,000.
