Although the Cook County News-Herald knows that the majority of sportsmen and women are law-abiding folks, there are a few that run afoul of the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Conservation Officers. The 2025 Gunflint Trial Canoe Races raised significant funds for the Gunflint Trail Fire Department

Once again, the annual Gunflint Trail Canoe Races, a testament to the Gunflint Trails community's spirit and unity, were held at the Gunflint Lodge harbor on the south shore. This year, the event collectively raised more than $20,000 for the Gunflint Trail Fire Department, a remarkable achievement.
