Although the Cook County News-Herald knows that the majority of sportsmen and women are law-abiding folks, there are a few that run afoul of the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Conservation Officers. Periodically, the DNR provides a report of some of the miscreants the Conservation Officers (CO) have encountered. The News-Herald shares these stories as a reminder to all to be safe and to follow the rules!
The Cook County Coalition of Lake Associations (CCCoLA) brings together lakeshore property owners representing over 20 Lake, Road, and Property Owner Associations to better understand and address factors that impact the health of Cook County waters, shorelands, and wildlife.
In February, Second Harvest Northland (SHN) kicked off the public phase of its $20 million Nourish the Northland Capital Campaign, which aims to strengthen its capacity to increase the amount and variety of food available to its agency and community partners and neighbors facing hunger within its 15-county NE Minnesota and NW Wisconsin service region.
At the August 5 park board meeting, Grand Marais Parks and Rec Director Dave Tersteeg reported that despite mixed weather, with considerable rain at times, the park's revenue remained strong. He noted that the July monthly revenue was practically even compared to 2024, despite a 5 percent rate increase yearto- date, which he considered a dip in occupancy.
Once again, the annual Gunflint Trail Canoe Races, a testament to the Gunflint Trails community's spirit and unity, were held at the Gunflint Lodge harbor on the south shore. This year, the event collectively raised more than $20,000 for the Gunflint Trail Fire Department, a remarkable achievement.
The Minnesota Department of Transportation closed Highway 61 on August 6, and the road will remain closed for up to 12 days for a culvert replacement project. Motorists will be rerouted to County Road 16, the Arrowhead Trail, and County Road 69, also known as the North Road, during the construction project.
