Stauber named 2023 Legislator of the Year for his work on the Great Lakes
On August 18, Minnesota U.S. Eighth District Congressman Pete Stauber was recognized by the Great Lakes Maritime Task Force for his strong support of the Great Lakes Navigation System and Clure Public Marine Terminal in Duluth, Minnesota.

Hovland ultralight pilot found deceased in Lake Superior
On Thursday, August 24 the body of Denny Pechacek was recovered from Lake Superior off the shore of Hovland. Extensive search efforts had taken place after he was reported missing while flying his ultralight craft on August 18, 2023.

Forest Service denies Lutsen Mountain Ski Hill Expansion Project
Lutsen Mountains’ plans to expand its operations onto National Forest lands have run into some hurdles through the years, but the latest one will be hard to overcome. The Superior National Forest released a Final Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) and Draft Record of Decision (ROD) on August 25, denying Lutsen Mountains to expand its ski hill onto adjacent National Forest System lands in the Tofte Ranger District of the Superior National Forest.

Rain Garden nearing completion
On Monday, August 28, a group from the Cook County Chapter of Minnesota Interfaith Power and Light (MNIPL), in collaboration with The Cook County Master Gardeners worked into the evening to restore the rain garden along Highway 61 at the old entrance to the Gunflint Trail.
