A closer look at Pete Smerud, Director of Wolf Ridge

This past week, Pete Smerud, Director of Wolf Ridge Environmental Learning Center, was honored to receive the 2023 ANCA Nature Center Leadership Award. This award acknowledges Smerud’s significant achievements at Wolf Ridge Environmental Learning Center and as a national leader in outdoor school. Smerud is the first Minnesotan to receive the award. Pete has worked at Wolf Ridge for 36 years and served as its director since 2012. But let’s dig a little into just who Pete is and his background.

Cook County Schools and Law Enforcement awarded grant for school bus Stop Arm Cameras

Cook County Schools, in collaboration with Cook County Law Enforcement, was awarded a grant to upgrade and install school bus stop arm cameras. Safety is a number one priority for the district and the stop arm cameras will ensure that the bus drivers can keep their focus on the roadway and students, while still being able to report violations in an effort to decrease/mitigate this safety hazard.

GSA awards $6.8 million for construction manager as advisor for Grand Portage, Minnesota, Land Port of entry modernization and expansion

Funded by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, the announcement is part of President Biden’s Investing in America Agenda As part of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) has awarded a contract for construction management and commissioning services in support of the Land Port of Entry (LPOE) modernization project in Grand Portage, Minnesota.

20 YEARS AGO AUGUST 22, 2003 v City councilors unanimously gave their backing to a request for the creation of a “tax-free zone” in the Grand Marais Business Development Area that, if successful, will encourage new businesses to move into town. The proposal was put forth by John Kremer, director of the Joint Cook County/Grand Marais Economic Development Authority.
