On June 24, a fire leveled Papa Charlie’s bar and restaurant at Lutsen Mountains. Almost exactly two years ago, the building’s namesake, Charles Mather Skinner III, died unexpectedly at the age of 87.

Traps will be set by survey staff now through July The Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA) will set approximately 20,000 traps this year looking for spongy moth ( Lymantria dispar), formally known as gypsy moth. The traps will be set throughout the eastern half of the state and in far northwestern Minnesota as part of a “western rotation.” This work is part of the MDA’s annual trapping survey program and is designed to protect Minnesota’s forests and urban areas from new infestations of spongy moth by detecting potential problem areas for future treatments.
Kjersti Vick, Marketing and PR Director Visit Cook County Properties along the Gunflint Trail in Grand Marais, Minnesota remain open and unaffected amid the 22-acre Spice Lake fire located within the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness approximately 10 miles west of the Gunflint Trail. As of Monday, June 19, 2023 the U.S. Superior National Forest Service announced that fire reduction efforts are successful and crews will be scaling back. Throughout the duration of the fire which began on June 13, 2023, the Gunflint Trail and the majority of the Boundary Waters have remained open to travel.
