What is Truth?

TRUTH. What is it? We all want truth, but what is TRUTH? If something is true, it is unchanging, constant, trustworthy, and it is true for EVERYONE. Some say that what is true for you may not be true for me. The truth of that statement is that you may believe something is true, but I don’t. You have your truth, I have mine. We have all heard it.

Bipartisan Wolf Management Bills introduced in Minnesota Congress

On February 19, Representative Lislegard (DFL) of Aurora, MN introduced House File 3903. This bill has two goals: to mandate an open wolf season once the gray wolf is federally delisted; and to establish the Northeast Deer Management Taskforce to develop effective and timely policies to increase deer populations in the northeastern part of the state. The bill is co-authored by Rep. Skraba (R) and Rep. Johnson (R). The companion bill in the Senate, SF3988, introduced on February 20, was authored by Senator Hauschild (DFL) from Hermantown, MN.

A letter of thanks

I am overwhelmed with gratitude and I want to share my story. Jenny and I have lattes daily, and I am careful to keep enough milk on hand to make the morning lattes for Jenny and myself. Tonight, we were low on milk, and Jenny—working very late, as usual, asked for some cocoa. That left us low on milk. I went out in the brutal wind and snow to check the heat at the Congregational Church that had been giving trouble for weeks. After I assured myself the heat was OK, I went to the Coop and then to Johnson’s grocery store, hoping one was open till 9 p.m. They weren’t. So, I pulled into Marathon Gas Station and realized I had no wallet. I believe it was the owner and an employee who said, 'The milk is over there; don't worry about payment.' I never shop there, so I don't think they know me. It was an extremely neighborly thing to do, and I am very grateful and impressed. I hope this testimonial is a better thanks than the extra cash I plan to pay tomorrow!

Letter writer asks for some clarity about previous comments

Before I start this letter, I’d like to congratulate Ms. Sue Hennessy and Reverend Limvere for their wildly creative interpretation of a letter I submitted on February 17. Ms. Hennessy suggested that I used 'hate rhetoric promoted by the “experts” cited in my letter.” And the Reverend Limvere reminded me that we should “do good, not bully.” I agree, so let’s discuss that “bully” word.

Is There a Doctor in the House?

In the days when physicians still made house calls, medicine was practiced with little technology and lots of heart. The life of a country doctor was a hard one, with long, lonely hours, little pay and late night drives through swirling snowstorms. Those were the days when physicians were forced to practice medicine with what was on hand, to pull miracles out of their black bags, and tap into the deep reservoirs of the quiet voice within that guided them through the forest of trees filled with the unthinkable. These country doctors were angels in the night creating something out of nothing and saving their patients’ lives in the process.

Former Lutsen Lodge owners thank the public for their concerns about the loss of their former business

We have struggled to put together a few words about the loss of the Lodge. There have already been so many beautiful words written about the place that Lutsen Resort, and the Lodge in particular, has had in the Minnesota community. Bryan Hansel and Carol DeSain have written elegant and poetic celebrations of the Resort that far overshadow our abilities.

What would Roger do?

As a thirty-year resident of Grand Marais, and someone who has benefited greatly from the Sawtooth Mountain Clinic over those years, I, like many Cook County residents am deeply concerned about recent events stemming from the North Shore Health Association leadership, and their punitive approach to the staff and overall health care system.

ISD 166 Bathroom/Locker Room Policy

Recently I’ve heard from friends of ours who have children in the local school district I.S.D. 166, and who’ve become concerned about the School District’s policies on bathrooms and locker rooms. Not knowing much about it, I was directed to page 23 of the Middle School/High School Handbook, located at cookcountyschools. org, in regard to the transgender or non-conforming students use of bathroom/ locker rooms. The district states that: “any student who desires increased privacy shall be provided with a reasonable alternative changing area.” However, the handbook also states that “All students, including transgender and non-conforming students shall be permitted to use any and all facilities consistent with their gender identity.” So, if a child is changing in an area with others of the same sex assigned at birth, another child with genitalia of the opposite sex can change their clothes in the same room.
