It’s Men in Women’s Sports, Really

The response to Mr. Wizykoski opinion was interesting in the fact that first we have to identify him as a conservative and then we have to trash his points of reference as “divide and conquer”, anti-trans, and transphobic while offering up a more “correct” point of reference like the ACLU, Forbes and Sports Illustrated. (these are not exactly centrist organizations). Let’s face it, conservatives and liberals both can find support for there side of the aisle without having to search very far. Finding real truth today is a near impossible task.

What is Truth?

TRUTH. What is it? We all want truth, but what is TRUTH? If something is true, it is unchanging, constant, trustworthy, and it is true for EVERYONE. Some say that what is true for you may not be true for me. The truth of that statement is that you may believe something is true, but I don’t. You have your truth, I have mine. We have all heard it.

Wildlife Matters

About two years ago, I wrote a column about migration (May 14, 2022) which included a summary of the annual migration of the eastern North American population of monarch butterflies to a location in Mexico which took a number of generations to complete. Then on Jan.28, 2023, my column included a paragraph about the major decline in monarch butterflies in North America.

Bipartisan Wolf Management Bills introduced in Minnesota Congress

On February 19, Representative Lislegard (DFL) of Aurora, MN introduced House File 3903. This bill has two goals: to mandate an open wolf season once the gray wolf is federally delisted; and to establish the Northeast Deer Management Taskforce to develop effective and timely policies to increase deer populations in the northeastern part of the state. The bill is co-authored by Rep. Skraba (R) and Rep. Johnson (R). The companion bill in the Senate, SF3988, introduced on February 20, was authored by Senator Hauschild (DFL) from Hermantown, MN.

A letter of thanks

I am overwhelmed with gratitude and I want to share my story. Jenny and I have lattes daily, and I am careful to keep enough milk on hand to make the morning lattes for Jenny and myself. Tonight, we were low on milk, and Jenny—working very late, as usual, asked for some cocoa. That left us low on milk. I went out in the brutal wind and snow to check the heat at the Congregational Church that had been giving trouble for weeks. After I assured myself the heat was OK, I went to the Coop and then to Johnson’s grocery store, hoping one was open till 9 p.m. They weren’t. So, I pulled into Marathon Gas Station and realized I had no wallet. I believe it was the owner and an employee who said, 'The milk is over there; don't worry about payment.' I never shop there, so I don't think they know me. It was an extremely neighborly thing to do, and I am very grateful and impressed. I hope this testimonial is a better thanks than the extra cash I plan to pay tomorrow!

Letter writer asks for some clarity about previous comments

Before I start this letter, I’d like to congratulate Ms. Sue Hennessy and Reverend Limvere for their wildly creative interpretation of a letter I submitted on February 17. Ms. Hennessy suggested that I used 'hate rhetoric promoted by the “experts” cited in my letter.” And the Reverend Limvere reminded me that we should “do good, not bully.” I agree, so let’s discuss that “bully” word.

Harm Reduction: Decreasing Stigma and Risk

Harm Reduction: Decreasing Stigma and Risk Harm reduction happens every day when we wash our hands, wear a seat belt or bike helmet, use the sidewalk, or stay home when we’re sick. The basic premise of harm reduction holds for all these programs – there are inherent risks involved with any behavior, and there are interventions that, when followed, reduce these risks for those who choose to engage in the behaviors.

Pollinators

Pollinators As spring approaches, many of us are thinking less about winter and more about warm weather activities. The fishing opener is very high on the list of many, but gardening and flower beds are the top interests of many others.
