So What is Truth?

So What is Truth? In this era of social media and misinformation, how can we possibly know what to believe? Last winter our community hosted a group of international journalists with the World Press Institute, and one of them, believe it or not, worked for the BBC as a “Disinformation Specialist.” What??? What is this world coming to? It’s interesting to note that there’s a difference between Misinformation and Disinformation. Misinformation is defined as inaccuracies that stem from inadvertent error, sort of like gossip based on a truth.

A letter of thanks

I am overwhelmed with gratitude and I want to share my story. Jenny and I have lattes daily, and I am careful to keep enough milk on hand to make the morning lattes for Jenny and myself. Tonight, we were low on milk, and Jenny—working very late, as usual, asked for some cocoa. That left us low on milk. I went out in the brutal wind and snow to check the heat at the Congregational Church that had been giving trouble for weeks. After I assured myself the heat was OK, I went to the Coop and then to Johnson’s grocery store, hoping one was open till 9 p.m. They weren’t. So, I pulled into Marathon Gas Station and realized I had no wallet. I believe it was the owner and an employee who said, 'The milk is over there; don't worry about payment.' I never shop there, so I don't think they know me. It was an extremely neighborly thing to do, and I am very grateful and impressed. I hope this testimonial is a better thanks than the extra cash I plan to pay tomorrow!

Letter writer asks for some clarity about previous comments

Before I start this letter, I’d like to congratulate Ms. Sue Hennessy and Reverend Limvere for their wildly creative interpretation of a letter I submitted on February 17. Ms. Hennessy suggested that I used 'hate rhetoric promoted by the “experts” cited in my letter.” And the Reverend Limvere reminded me that we should “do good, not bully.” I agree, so let’s discuss that “bully” word.

Letters to the Editor

In the Herald-News editorial, a man wrote that allowing children and young people to explore their gender identity can cause most people to be uncomfortable and that the 99% of ‘normal’ (my characterization) people shouldn’t have to be surprised or uncomfortable because of it. The right of the majority is our country’s rule, he proclaims. This past week, news came out in Oklahoma that a young student, named Nex Benedict, was bullied and beaten by their classmates because they identify as non-binary. The parents were called to bring Nex home and were told they (the youth) was suspended because of an altercation in the bathroom with three girls. Even though Nex was bleeding and bruised, no police were called or medical care offered. The parents took Nex to the emergency room, where Nex was treated and released. The next day they collapsed, and an ambulance was called. Nex was pronounced dead at the scene.

The tax-paying public of Grand Marais should question the decisions of your mayor and city council on their plan of tearing down the liquor store and city hall and replace them with a new liquor store and city hall. You already own the property.

“How long before you save us from all this violence? Why do you make me watch such terrible injustice? Why do you allow violence, lawlessness, crime, and cruelty to spread everywhere? Laws cannot be enforced; justice is always the loser; criminals crowd out honest people and twist the laws around.” In 1947 a Bedouin shepherd happened across several old scrolls preserved in earthenware vessels hidden in caves above the Dead Sea. Many of the hand-written ancient parchments contained biblical texts of the Old Testament, some thousand years older than previously known Hebrew manuscripts.

I want to thank Mr. Wizykoski for introducing me to Lia Thomas, the first openly transgender athlete to win a Division I national championship. She is valiantly challenging the transphobia and sexism in sports. It is a great dialogue and brings to light the gender divide in sports and how it is more based on assumptions rather than science.
