Homage to Librarians

I probably shouldn't be writing my first letter to the editor with this brain fog, but write I must. I find myself a week+ into COVID. Zero stars. It's my first time so I know I'm lucky on many levels.

Thank you, grocers!

November is the month of Food and Gratitude! This makes it the perfect time to thank our local grocers for their support of supplemental food programs. You may be familiar with SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program), but have you heard of WIC (Women, Infants, & Children)? Do you know about the Produce Vouchers that are funded by the Grand Marais Food Shelf?

North Shore Health Responds to Community Concerns

The Board of Directors and Administration at North Shore Health would like to thank everyone who has shared their concerns about our quality of care, our commitment to the community and the sustainability of our facility. We have heard the concerns about the change in Dr. Bruce Dahlman’s employment via email, text, social media, phone calls, and from those who attended today’s board meeting. We know it is not easy to take time from your busy schedules to share your comments, and we appreciate it. We want you to know that we hear you and we care. As a long-standing pillar of this community, North Shore Health is firmly committed to our mission: “Community Access to Compassionate Care”. That is no small task in these challenging times for rural healthcare.

Na Na November

October went by in a blink. November is now a time to turn on the furnace, light some candles, and bake some warm bread in the oven. I love it when the house smells of cinnamon, spice, and everything nice. I did a variation on banana bread this year by adding pumpkin and extra spices to the recipe. I don’t know if I will return to my traditional banana bread recipe anytime soon. The nutmeg warmed not only the aroma of the bread, but I could feel it warming up my throat like a hug from the inside.

Push me off the bench

We were matriculated to the big, old high school for 9th grade, and our first 9th grade football game was the second or third week and we lost. Back in our crowded, noisy and indifferent locker room, I got up on the bench I shared with Greg E.

Let’s talk Turkey

Let’s talk Turkey Deep into Autumn, the season John Keats referred to as “the season of mists and mellow fruitfulness,” the one thing on everyone’s mind is a bird. Yes, November is the month of the turkey.

Watch out for bad dogs at the dog park

A few weeks ago, we took our dog, Rascal, for a romp at the Grand Marais dog park. When we entered, we heard loud barking and a commotion that sounded like a dog fight. We walked the other direction from the ruckus but were soon confronted by a ferocious big husky-shepherd looking dog who immediately proceeded to try to kill Rascal. The dog was out of control and her owner was nowhere in sight. I couldn’t stop myself. I screamed bloody murder, begging the owner to remove the dog from the park, which she quite nonchalantly did while telling us it was Rascal’s fault. We haven’t been back since.

Writer expresses dismay over dismissal of Dr. Dahlman

I am writing to express my profound dismay regarding the recent dismissal of Dr. Bruce Dahlman from North Shore Health. This is a serious mistake. I have known Dr. Dahlman for over 30 years. I was his supervisor when we worked together for several years in Kenya. He is a superb clinician. The patient comes first in all that he does. He is kind and compassionate. He practices with the highest ethical standards. His academic qualifications are impeccable. He has considerable administrative skills and is a consummate team player. How could anyone even consider terminating a skilled family doctor with a 19-page CV and over 40 years of medical experience in remote, underserved communities? Something is amiss.
