Benesh and Asay complete the Superior Fall 100-mile trail race

Chad Benesh, 50, Grand Marais, placed 140th in the 102.9-mile Superior Fall Trail race held two weeks ago on the Superior Hiking Trails. Chad completed the distance in 36:42:01. There were 163 finishers in this grueling race, which saw runners run from Gooseberry Falls to Caribou Highlands, traversing often hilly, rocky, rutted trails with a net elevation change of 34,700 feet.

Ezme Mundell and Arlo Litterst competed in the North Shore Inline Marathon

The Northshore Inline Marathon took place on September 14 in Duluth, Minnesota. Cook County residents Ezme Mundell and Arlo Litterst participated in the Rollerski half marathon. The race followed the breathtakingly scenic highway and entered Duluth on the freeway. All the roads were closed off so the race could happen. Toward the end of the race, participants skied through the freeway tunnels and ended near the DECC.

Runners brave cold temps and tough terrain at this year’s Superior Fall Trail races

Not many local runners competed in this year's Superior Trail races, but one local had an outstanding finish in the marathon. Looking almost as fresh as a daisy, okay,maybe a little wilted, at the Tofte Sawbill aid station was Buck Benson, 72, who stopped to say hi, tarried little as he grabbed a drink and was on his merry way. Benson would finish one of the most challenging trail marathon courses in the U.S. in 6 hours and 35 minutes, 8 seconds, and place 110 overall, beating two-thirds of the field!

Former CCHS grad completes 100-mile Superior Trail race

Kyle Martinson, 29, the son of Bruce and Cheryl Martinson, Schroeder, and a sterling Cook County ISD 166 High School graduate, completed the Superior Trail 100-mile trail race last weekend. Now residing in St. Paul, Kyle's roots in the community are still strong, and his achievement in the 102.9mile course in 34:59:55 is a source of local pride. He placed eighth in his age group (18-29) and finished 106th overall in the grueling race. Congratulations to Kyle!

Football team falls to MIB

The Vikings had a huge task ahead of them as they traveled to open their season against the 2023 state nineman champion Mountain Iron-Buhl (MI-B) squad. The Vikings opened their season at perennially powerhouse Mountain Iron-Buhl Rangers on Thursday, August 29 and lost 42-6 to the defending Minnesota State nine man champions.
