Results of the 2024 Fisherman’s Picnic Trail Run

On a warm day—not the 90 F heat of the day before— Aulis Nelson, 16, won the men's five-mile trail race in the Fisherman's Picnic Trail Run, sponsored by the North Superior Ski and Run Club. Aulis covered the hilly terrain in 32.59 to win comfortably over second-place finisher Louie St. George, 42, Duluth, who came in at 34:52. Aulis's parents have a cabin here, so he is well-known to the local runners.

Happy Hikers’ next hike is international

FINGER POINT TRAIL, CANADA – AUGUST 21, 2024 The Happy Hikers will travel to Ontario, Canada. The trail begins at the Visitor Center just across the border. The first half of this trail is fairly easy and you will walk right along Lake Superior. Then it becomes very rocky as the route climbs closer to the lookout point. The climb to the top is very rocky and somewhat challenging. Once arrived at the top, this trail offers gorgeous panoramic views for either a great photo opportunity or time to rest and enjoy nature. We will have lunch at the picnic tables at the Visitor Center upon our return.

Happy hikers next trek is Caribou Rock Trail–August 14

The Happy Hikers will hike a portion of the Caribou Rock Trail. This rugged trail is in the Boundary Waters, so we are limited to 9 people in a group. If we have more than 9 people, we will split into two groups and stagger our hiking start times. The trailhead is accessed off Hungry Jack Lake Rd (up the Gunflint Trail). The trail begins gradually uphill, and after 3/4 mile, we come to a beautiful overlook of West Bearskin Lake. Another 1/4 mile, and we are at an overlook of Moss Lake. The trail continues over rugged terrain, lots of ups and downs, and a couple of rock scrambles that we may need to help each other traverse. There’s a reason this is called Caribou ROCK Trail! We will also get a view of Duncan Lake. This is an out-and-back hike, so we will continue a little over 1.5 miles before turning around. We will enjoy our lunch at the Moss Lake overlook on the way back. Well-behaved dogs on a leash are welcome.
