Grand Marais Planning Commission grants two variances

BRIAN LARSEN On Thursday, April 4, The Grand Marais Planning Commission granted the Jane Penner variance request and preliminary plat application, clearing one large hurdle for Jane Penner to build 12 homes on a two-acre lot in Grand Marais, not far from Humphrey Circle. Penner has hired a local contractor who will hire and train young carpenters to build the homes, which she intends to sell at cost.

Vikings do well in their first track meet of the season

The Polar League indoor meet was held on March 22 at the University of Wisconsin Superior (UWS) indoor track, and Cook County boys and girls had a very good first meet. Vikings Head Boys’ and Girls’ Track Coach April Wahlstrom said, “The first meet was awesome!” This year's CCHS squad might be the biggest ever, with about 30 girls and 50 boys participating in track and field.

Success in the Pool: Duluth YMCA Swimmers Shine at Regional Championship meet

Over this past weekend, March 22-24, the Duluth Area Family YMCA sent 8 swimmers, including 3 swimmers from the Cook County Branch, to Marion, Iowa to compete in the YMCA North Central Region’s Regional Championship Swim Meet. This meet was held at the Lin Mar Aquatic Center and was attended by the top swimmers from around the North Central Region, which includes Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Nebraska.

Melissa Brown, Grand Portage, was named to the President's List at Pine Technical and Community College. Students named to the President's List must have enrolled in 12 credits or more and received a grade point average of 4.0, a straight A average.
