Although actual work on the project had started a bit earlier, the official ground-breaking ceremony for the new apartment complex for the elderly was held beneath sunny skies in Grand Marais last Friday afternoon, November 4. Manning the shovels were Stuart Jackson, left, chairman of Grand Marais Housing Authority, and Mayor Richard Humphrey. The 31-unit apartment building has been a major project of the Housing Authority, launched six years ago through efforts of a number of people, including former Mayor Joe Thomsen. Joining other city and housing authority officials at the ceremony were employees from Brutger Companies, Inc., the firm which is building the apartments. When completed, the three-story building will boast the first elevator in Grand Marais, and will also have a sauna and laundry facilities. The apartment will include 27 one-bedroom apartments and four two-bedroom units. The building is also expected to have an impact on the availability of housing in the community. The apartment building is taking shape on the site of the former elementary school. Reprinted from the November 10, 1977 Cook County News-Herald
