Mark Abrahamson

Mark Thomas Abrahamson, RN, 70, of Grand Marais, MN, passed away on April 30th 2025, at his home on Good Harbor Hill.
Mark was born in Moses Lake, WA, on October 29, 1954, and grew up in Bloomington, MN. Mark moved to Cook County in 1982. Because of his love of music and acting, he became very involved with the Grand Marais Playhouse. He was an avid skier and joined the Lutsen Mountain Ski Patrol where he patrolled for over 40 years.
Marks career in nursing continued at the Grand Portage Reservation when he moved to the northland, and he always said “It was the best job I ever had”. In 1992 Grand Portage Tribal Counsel honored Mark with a special recognition award for his dedicated service as Health Director of the Grand Portage community. Mark earned his Master of Arts Degree from the College of St. Scholastica in 2001. He started teaching nursing for three northern Minnesota colleges and eventually teaching for Cook County Higher Education. Mark worked closely with the college to design a classroom especially equipped for teaching nursing students. He was honored by the campus with the classroom being named after him. In 2024 Cook County named Mark Citizen of the Year.
For many years Mark volunteered at WTIP and became an effervescent voice on North Shore Morning and North Shore Weekend. In 2020 he won the Ampers Volunteer of the Year Award for excellence at WTIP.
For many years Mark was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church and enjoyed singing with the church choir.
Mark was preceded in death by his parents, Howard and Joan Abrahamson and brother Bill (William). He is survived by his husband Steve, son Chad Byers (Jessy) and daughter Naomi Smith (Mark) grand children; Laiten, River and Gentry Byers, and Olivia Smith. Sisters Lisa Rillo (Arnel), Lynn Abrahamson. Nieces Lana Meisner (Daniel) Victoria Fahey, (Kyle) and nephews Antonio Rillo, (Anna) and Beckley Rumph (Kia).
Marks family, friends and coworkers will miss his happy nature, willingness to volunteer for his community and amazing cooking. He gave everything of himself to his community and family and will be greatly missed.
A memorial Service will be held at 11:00 am Saturday, May 17th at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Grand Marais MN. In lieu of flowers, support for WTIP is preferred.
