Terence Quinn

Terence (Terry) Michael Quinn of Grand Marais, Minnesota passed peacefully into the arms of his Heavenly Father on Thursday January 23rd, 2025 at St. Luke’s Hospital in Duluth, MN after a long battle with cancer.
Terry was born to John and Doris Quinn in Chicago, Illinois on September 11, 1947 and raised in the suburbs there. His family moved to Grand Marais while he was young. It was a favorite place where his family vacationed enjoying canoeing and the beautiful area. He graduated from Cook County High School in 1964 and enrolled in Minnesota State Junior College in Ely, MN, graduating in 1968.
Terry entered the United States Navy in 1968, and received his certificate of retirement on June 1, 1989. (During his time in the Navy, he was stationed all over Europe and visited many different countries including Japan, Korea, Ukraine, Russia, Denmark, Finland, Thailand, Scotland, Austria, England, Australia, Switzerland, Denmark, Spain, Portugal, China, Belgium, West Germany, France, Sweden, Bulgaria, Hong Kong, Kenya, Philippines, Holland, Italy, the Netherlands, Monaco, Barcelona, Great Britain, Venezuela, Rome, Guam, Jamaica, Morocco, Panama, Puerto Rico, Singapore, Liechtenstein, Malta, and Greece.)
Upon returning to Grand Marais Terry worked for various local businesses in the community including Gene’s IGA, the U.S. Forest Service, Best Western, Lutsen Mountains (aka Happy Valley), and Blue Water Cafe. He was a hard working, trustworthy, dependable employee. He took his duties seriously and truly cared about helping the patrons of the businesses he was employed at.
Terry’s hobbies included reading, wood working, and travel abroad. He was interested in researching anything related to Navy ships or in regard to World War II and Germany where his father had been a prisoner of war. He enjoyed interacting with people in the community and having breakfast at South of the Border and Blue Water Cafe where he would never leave without sharing his knowledge of the lowest gas prices and what the stock market was doing with whomever he was sharing breakfast with. Terry also enjoyed playing miniature golf with friends, buying “fat pills” at World’s Best Donuts to share with others, bringing cheesecake to the gals at the office of his financial advisor or the nurses at the cancer center, and bringing home gifts from his travels abroad for those he cared about. His motto was “Don’t worry, be happy!”, and he was known to many as The Mighty Quinn! His infectious laugh and quirky personality will missed!
Terry is preceded in death by his father John, his mother, Doris, and his sister Shannon. He is survived by several cousins: Kathy Jerry, Green Bay, WI; Eugene Miller and Richard Miller, Chicago; Alison Quinn and Jamie Quinn. A celebration of life memorial will be held at Cornerstone Community Church in Grand Marais, MN on April 26, 2025 at 1pm.
