20 YEARS AGO JULY 4, 2003 v When Cory Pederson taxied onto the runway at Grand Marais airport on Tuesday, he was met by a happy and relieved mother, family, and friends. He had just completed one of the final requirements for obtaining a private pilot license, the cross-country flight.

More than 3,000 people attended the twoday semi-annual Hovland Arts Festival held at the Hovland Town Hall July 1 and 2 on a weekend blessed with beautiful weather. With 40 artists on hand displaying their work and wares there was a lot to look at and choose from.

Assessor’s summer 2023 update & Hovland property inspections On June 13, 2023, the County Board of Appeals & Equalization meeting adjourned, finalizing the 2023 assessment. The final 2023 assessed values show that Cook County’s overall taxable market value increased 14.2 percent over 2022.
Kjersti Vick, Marketing and PR Director Visit Cook County Properties along the Gunflint Trail in Grand Marais, Minnesota remain open and unaffected amid the 22-acre Spice Lake fire located within the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness approximately 10 miles west of the Gunflint Trail. As of Monday, June 19, 2023 the U.S. Superior National Forest Service announced that fire reduction efforts are successful and crews will be scaling back. Throughout the duration of the fire which began on June 13, 2023, the Gunflint Trail and the majority of the Boundary Waters have remained open to travel.
