The Early Childhood Connections Program is thrilled to announce our January guest and co-host for our monthly social, Local Author and Nurse Practitioner, Kristin DeArruda Wharton author of Your Big Lake Family Gets Bigger. She will be at the Community Center with us to celebrate the new year and new babies in Cook County (Jan 6, from 10 – 11:30 a.m.).
Down Memory Lane
20 YEARS AGO JANUARY 2, 2004 v Last week, the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency announced that the Poplar River, from the Superior Hiking Trail bridge downstream three miles to its mouth at Lake Superior, was among 215 waters statewide that were added to the agency’s Impaired Waters list. Such waters do not meet the water quality standards of the national Clean Water Act.

Historical Reflections
The Harbor Light has been under the management of many people throughout the years. Today, the business is owned by Jeff and Susan Gecas and managed by Cassidy Gecas, who renamed it 'Up Yonder.' Over the last couple of years, the building has been redone inside and out and brought back to life as a bar/restaurant with a great music venue.
Wolverines are listed as threatened under the Endangered Species Act
As climates are warming, wolverines are disappearing from snowy mountain areas, prompting the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to add wolverines living in the Lower 48 to the threatened under the Endangered Species Act.
Grand Marais Library’s 2024 Friday Night Reels
Winter film series is back The Grand Marais Public Library will be hosting Friday Night Reels, a unique film series showing weekly on Fridays at 6 p.m., with the first screening on January 5 and the last on March 8. The library’s film committee has selected ten independent and foreign films in order to inspire thoughtful discussion after each.
Hospital enters management agreement with St. Luke’s

Cook County Commissioners hold business meeting
Cook County Commissioners held a year-end business meeting on December 19, a date typically saved for the Committee of the Whole. • Commissioners approved a final 2024 budget and levy for the Cook County-Grand Marais Economic Development Authority of $490,720, an increase of $135,720 over 2023.
Cook County local 1 percent local option sales tax
Auditor/Treasurer Braidy Powers prepared the October one percent local option sales tax numbers for the county board at the board’s December 22 meeting. Across the county, the one percent sales tax brought in $295,363 for October, a 7.4 percent increase over 2022 for the same month.
