DNR, county sheriffs warn of poor ice conditions across Minnesota

Widespread rain, wind and unseasonably warm weather during recent days have degraded ice conditions throughout the state, according to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources. While the week between the Christmas and New Year’s holidays has become popular among the owners of deluxe fish houses (known also as wheelhouses), conditions so far this winter mean few, if any, areas of the state have the ice thickness necessary for these types of ice structures.

Grand Marais Planning and Zoning Commission okays Mayhew Inn’s owners plan to add stores, restaurant, lounge and lodging downtown Grand Marais under one roof

Joel Saint John, owner of the Mayhew Inn, unveiled his plans for a 10,000-square-foot mixed-use development to the Grand Marais Planning Commission on Wednesday, January 3, 2024. Saint John said he and his wife will be the sole owners of the building, with no outside investors.

2024 Township elections filing period

The election year has started for the West End townships, Candidates filing now for the March election COOK COUNTY – The filing period has started for the annual elections in Lutsen, Schroeder and Tofte, the three townships in Cook County. On the ballot this year are one of the three Supervisors and the Clerk in each township.

Irene Peterson turns 103

In 1921, the dishwasher was introduced to the public. It wouldn't be until 1939 that TV would hit the market, but by then, Irene Peterson was 18 years old, already living through the Great Depression and wondering what would come next.
