Former Lutsen Lodge owners thank the public for their concerns about the loss of their former business

We have struggled to put together a few words about the loss of the Lodge. There have already been so many beautiful words written about the place that Lutsen Resort, and the Lodge in particular, has had in the Minnesota community. Bryan Hansel and Carol DeSain have written elegant and poetic celebrations of the Resort that far overshadow our abilities.

Is There a Doctor in the House?

In the days when physicians still made house calls, medicine was practiced with little technology and lots of heart. The life of a country doctor was a hard one, with long, lonely hours, little pay and late night drives through swirling snowstorms. Those were the days when physicians were forced to practice medicine with what was on hand, to pull miracles out of their black bags, and tap into the deep reservoirs of the quiet voice within that guided them through the forest of trees filled with the unthinkable. These country doctors were angels in the night creating something out of nothing and saving their patients’ lives in the process.

County Board votes to approve Grand Portage’s request to the state to receive tax exemptions for tribal parcels used for public purposes

BRIAN LARSEN Commissioners approved sending a letter to the Minnesota Legislature to support a request by the Grand Portage Band of Lake Superior Chippewa to receive tax exemptions for tribal parcels used for public purposes. Grand Portage Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Tribal Chair Bobby Deschampe, former Tribal board member John Morrin and Tribal Secretary/ Treasurer April McCormick appeared before the commissioners and presented 'Grand Portage Land History and Treaty Relations in Cook County.

When Hungarian Eugene Fodor created his first travel guide in 1936… On the Continent, little could he know that his travel guides would one day contain destinations for tourists not to travel to. Today, Internet Brands owns and publishes the travel guide, and on the 2024 No List is Lake Superior.

Judith Karen Bursack

Judith Karen Bursack (Judy), 86 years, passed away peacefully on February 11th in Duluth, MN. She was born on August 4th and grew up in Squaw Lake, MN. Judy Schirmer graduated from Black Duck High School in 1955. She attended college in Bemidji for one year before marrying John Bursack on August 31st, 1957. They made their home in Richfield, MN then returned to Northome in 1958 and had their first child, Michael. In 1962, they moved to the north shore. Kristin and Jack joined the family several years later and they raised their family in Schroeder, MN. Judy enjoyed many years bowling, playing volleyball, sewing and baking. She was an avid reader. She was primarily a homemaker but in 1985, she started working for the Grand Marais State Bank in Tofte. In 1998, Judy and John sold their home in Schroeder so they could enjoy their winters in Palmetto, Florida. During the summer, they would return to their beloved little cabin on the lake at Lamb's Resort. They moved back to Northome in 2006 and enjoyed many great years with their childhood friends. In November 2018, they moved to Duluth, MN to live near their children.
