With the recent resignation of Grand Marais City Councilor Aaron Carlson, the Grand Marais City Council was tasked with finding a replacement for Carlson on the council through the end of this year. Four applicants, Amanda Anderson, Dean Jacobsen, William Lovaas, and Brian Greg, signed up to fill the vacancy.
Reprinted with permission from the Washington State University WSU Insider In recognition of his research to advance understanding of the Earth’s crust, geology Professor Jeffrey Vervoort has been elected as a 2024 Geochemistry Fellow by the Geochemical Society and European Association of Geochemistry. “This award is particularly gratifying because the Geochemical Society and European Association of Geochemistry make up my closest scientific community, and therefore this award represents recognition from my scientific peers,” said Vervoort, who joins 15 others from an international field elected this year as Geochemistry Fellows.

North Shore Living January/February 2024 News Buffalo Herds This song, “Buffalo Herd,” at first seems like a throwaway. With its references to ridiculous situations regarding things that you can't do and ending with “but you can be happy if you've a mind to.” I’m sure most of you have seen a buffalo herd or at least a few buffalo in your life.
The 2024 Cook County Nordic Ski Team's season culminated with three weeks of exciting skiing not just for our high school team, but also Minnesota and the U.S. Following our team's determined skiing (and cheering) at Sections in early February, the skiing roared forward with an unbeatable trio combination - the MN Nordic State Meet at Giant's Ridge, then two days of World Cup Nordic skiing in Minneapolis, and finally three days of the American Birkebeiner event in Cable, WI. Members of our Cross Country Ski team were present at all three!
