Grounding & Sunshine Spring has sprung (unless winter decides to give us a few more surprises!) and that means warmer weather, more sunshine, and more reason to get outside. Of course, this gives more opportunity for exercise and cleansing fresh air, but even the subtle more passive aspects of being outside are essential to healthy living.

I thought about what I didn't learn young (riding, love) and what I did (French, being alone) and concluded: If you learn being alone too young, you may never be able to shake its hold on you. As a boy in those days now so foreign to me and to all of us, my mother would drive me to the mall, and a place like that for a boy was like going into the woods, a smothering place that, in hindsight now, was less safe than we thought, and in hindsight was more safe than I thought.

The new book features English and Ojibwe versions of traditional Grand Portage stories

BRIAN LARSEN Traditional sacred stories first published individually by the Grand Portage Band of Lake Superior Chippewa in the 1970s have been brought together in a new book titled Nanaboozhoo Babaamosed: Nanaboozhoo Went Walking & Other Stories from Grand Portage. The stories were first published as part of the Bilingual Reading Series, Ojibwe Cultural Resource Center of I.S.D.

Promise Act Program providing grants up to $50,000 for Minnesota small businesses

Northland Foundation is accepting applications from northeast Minnesota businesses through May 21, 2024 The Northland Foundation announces the Promise Act Grant Program, making available $1.1 million for grants to eligible northeast Minnesota businesses and nonprofit organizations. Funding and eligibility guidelines were established in law during the 2023 Minnesota legislative session.

10 YEARS AGO APRIL 12, 2013 v By a 4-0 vote, the Cook County North Shore Hospital board voted to accept the 2014-2015 Hospital and Care Center Association labor agreement at its April 7 meeting. Under terms of the agreement employees will get wage increases ranging from .75 percent to 2 percent.
