A garage used as housing, located at 120 W 2nd Street, Grand Marais, caught fire around 6 p.m. on Wednesday, March 24. The Grand Marais Fire Department, First Responders, North Shore Health Ambulance, and Cook County Sheriff 's Department personnel quickly arrived, and the fire was soon extinguished. No injuries were reported.
The City of Grand Marais has been selected to participate in the Rural Minnesota Community Safety Project led by Northspan. 'This survey is part of a collaborative effort by the Nonviolent Peace force and Northspan to enhance safety, well-being, and security in the Grand Marais area, including the tribal lands of the Grand Portage Band of Lake Superior Chippewa.

As part of the final batch of appropriations bills approved by the Senate in the early hours of Saturday morning, funding to the Department of Health and Human Services included report language directing the Secretary of HHS to use part of its public health paid advertising budget to reach small or rural markets through local media outlets, including small daily and weekly newspapers.

Just last week, the Republican Study Committee (RSC), which counts about 80% of all House Republicans as members, released a plan calling for a $1.5 TRILLION dollar cut from Social Security as well as an increase in the retirement age in its budget proposal. The current age to receive full Social Security benefits was raised to 67 previously, and the Republicans won’t say how much higher they plan to raise it. Presidential candidate, Donald Trump, has echoed his support for this plan.

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources is encouraging homeowners to remove birdfeeders now and check their property for food sources that could attract bears. While most of the female bears with cubs and yearlings are still near their denning areas, the mild winter has caused some full-grown bears to emerge from dens early to look around or find a quick, high-calorie snack.
Cook County High School Vikings' Head Baseball Coach Arleigh Jorgenson welcomed 36 kids out for baseball, 18 players at the junior varsity and varsity level, and 16 Junior high players, 6th through 8th grade. 'It is exciting, great kids top to bottom and they can all play!' said the coach.
