Graveside services for Ann Lorraine Nelsen
A graveside blessing and interment for Ann Nelsen will take place at Maple Hill Cemetery in Grand Marais on Saturday, July 13, 2024 at 11 a.m. Reception to follow in the church hall at St. John’s Catholic Church in Grand Marais, to end to later than 3:00 p.m.. Anna (Ann) Lorraine Nelsen, aged 86, died on April 18 in Hopkins, MN. The funeral took place at the Basilica of St. Mary in Minneapolis in April.
Little boy hit by tree in BWCAW heads home
On June 18, during a storm, a nineyear-old boy camping in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW) with his family was hit by a tree that had fallen on his tent. When the incident occurred, a family of four from Satanta, Kansas, had been camping at Snipe Lake, the eastern campsite.
Conservation Officer Tales
Although the Cook County News-Herald knows that the majority of sportsmen and women are law-abiding folks, there are a few that run afoul of the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Conservation Officers. Periodically, the DNR provides a report of some of the miscreants the Conservation Officers (CO) have encountered. The News-Herald shares these stories as a reminder to all to be safe and to follow the rules!

This year’s Summer Solstice and Wooden Boat Festival, taking place June 21-22, continues favorite traditions while bringing a greater focus on hands-on craft opportunities for all.

Cook County MN Strategic Plan Update At its April 23, 2024, meeting, the Cook County Board of Commissioners approved a new three-year strategic plan for County Government. The plan includes elements focused on building organizational efficiency and resiliency, maintaining a highly qualified workforce, and enhancing transparency and communication.

The Gunflint Trail Canoe Races Return July 17, 2024
The annual Gunflint Trail Canoe Races returns Wednesday, July 17, 2024. This community gathering and fundraiser will begin at 4:00 p.m.
