On Friday, June 14, the bulldozers, backhoes, dump trucks, and other earth-moving equipment shut down at the Northwest Corner of the Gunflint Trail and 5th Avenue to allow a celebratory groundbreaking event for the 51-unit Gunflint Vue apartments that are being built there.
Recently my 5-year-old was invited to celebrate a child’s half birthday. The invitation boasted, “Jerimiah is turning 5 and a half!” (Names and ages have been changed to protect the privacy of those extremely guilty of this kind of thing.) The invitation included a comment section with the RSVP so I did: With regrets, we will not attend Jeremiah’s half-birthday jamboree because where does it end, man? Do we attend Tiny Tim’s throwdown where he turns 4 and ¾? What about small Sarah’s shindig where she turns six and 7/6? Shall we frequent funsized Fernando’s fiesta celebrating his fourth and 263/365?!
Last Friday, as chair of the Park and Recreation Board, I had the pleasure of participating with about 100 others in the dedication of the new Overlook Landing. It serves as a Community Connection for city residents, tourists, North House users, and Rec Park residents. Every time I go there, I like it better, both because it honors artist George Morrison and because it is a space that looks and feels good.

I can’t remember if it was a red or white pine that held the snow which smelled and tasted like a fragrant boreal snowcone.
Roam “Wherever I find myself living on this Earth, I somehow always seem to find places of nature for refuge and to roam when the mind-body-soul needs it most. Between expanding cities, endless suburbia, evermore clearcutting, and more restrictions on land usage, it can be harder and harder to find a “slice of paradise,” ie, a small wooded area, a narrow track to follow, a place of fresh air and all the colors of the Earth.

Following her little lead, I can affirm: If I did like petunias, I should have to grow them, which would make me so glum because I don't. No matter.
Lutsen-based non-profit, Let’s Plant Trees, gave away 5,000 tree seedlings this spring! White pine, jack pine, sugar maple, bur oak and northern red oak are just some of the species given away for planting along the north shore this spring season. Recipients of the free trees signed up on our website and came from as far northeast as Grand Portage, and as far south as Cloquet, to collect their seedlings and learnmoreabouthow,where, and why to plant trees. “We are incredibly thankful for the community support that we have received thus far! The response from everyone we have met on this journey has been overwhelmingly positive, and working side by side with our friends and neighbors to enhance our reforestation efforts has been incredibly rewarding,” said Mike Nicklow.
